red as spring
dusk

Cycling home last friday evening, I passed a woman outside her house painting a number of wheelbarrows red. Ordinarily, this would not have made a great deal of sense to me. However, since I had been asked to judge the "Red Barrows" display at the local young farmers club rally the following day, I could fully apreciate that, in this case, so much did depend...

Matt, What criteria are applied to the barrows? Who is eligible to be a contestant? Curious minds want to know.

Local Young Farmer's Clubs (11-25's) take part in the rally, which included all kinds of creative, artistic, cooking and stock related competitions. Some weeks before the event, all the clubs get prior notification of the overall theme, in the case of this year's event, the 70's. Thus the "Red Barrows" event required teams of at least 6 young people to perform a 5 minute display on a 70's theme. This was then judged by allocating 200 points over themes including display, interpretation, commentary etc. The overall winner had 5 wheelbarrows "made over" with depictions of 70's movies - Rocky (completed with a mini Stallone in the Ring), Grease, Mash, Jaws and another I forget. I would have liked to get photos, but I couldn't manage this while attempting to judge the competition as well

Thanks for the details, Matt. It sounds pretty zany and I hope you had a good time.
